Single Vision Lenses:
A single vision lens is a mono visual lens yielding a single field of vision whether there is no prescription or a single RX prescription. Single vision prescription lenses contain the same amount of vision correction over the entire lens. These lenses can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
Bifocal lenses contain two different prescroptions in the same lens. The primary purpose of bifocals is to provide the optimal balance between distance vision and near focusing needs. Many refer to them as "lined bifocals"
Trifocals are eyeglasses where the lenses have three regions to correct for distance, intermediate (arm's length), and near vision.
Progressive lenses are corrective lenses used in glasses to correct prebyopia and other common disorders. Unlike other lenses, progressive lenses contain a gradient of increasing lens power, designed to help train the wearer's eye to improve vision. The glasses start with your distance power and then gradually increases at the bottom to your reading prescription.
High Index Lenses:
The most common materials available for use in lenses used to be glass and a hard resin called CR-39. But recently, more materials have become available. High index materials are named because they have a higher index of light refraction. Basically, they can do the same optical job that glass or CR-39 does, but with less lens material. That makes high index lenses thinner and/or lighter than regular lenses. With high index lenses, you can avoid having "soda bottle" lenses. Not only are the lenses thinner, but they are also lighter, making your glasses more comfortable. When learning about high index lenses, you may hear many unfamiliar numbers and terms. . Basically, remember the higher the index of refraction, the thinner the lens.
- Trivex: This material is the newest in the lens category. It has a mid index, but it is so light that it almost floats on water! It is a great choice for safety for impact resistant eye wear. It also works very well for rimless eyeglasses as it is one of the strongest lens materials available.
- Polycarbonate: The first and still one of the most popular higher index plastic is polycarbonate. Polycarbonate was originally developed for fighter jet cockpits. It is very strong, very light, and resistant to scratches and breaking. Most sports lenses are made of polycarbonate. Polycarbonate has an index of 1.58
- Mid-Index: High index materials are classified by numbers. Again, the higher the number, the thinner and lighter the lens. The lower numbers are classified as mid-index lenses. Mid-index lenses are those with numbers such as 1.54, 1.56, and 1.57. These lenses are thinner than glass (1.53), and nearly as strong as CR-39 (1.49), or plastic.
- High-Index: High index lenses, such as 1.60, 1.66, 1.67, 1.70, and 1.71, are much thinner than regular glass or plastic. Talk with our trained optician to decide which high index lens is right for you.
Anti-reflective coating (also called AR coating or anti-glare coating) improves both your vision through your lenses and the appearance of your eyeglasses. Both benefits are due to AR coating's ability to eliminate reflections of light from the front and back surface of eyeglass lenses. Today's modern anti-reflective coatings can virtually eliminate the reflection of light from eyeglass lenses, allowing 99.5 percent of available light to pass through the lenses and enter the eye for good vision. Anti-reflective coating is parlarly good for night driving, computer work, By eliminating reflections, AR coating also makes your eyeglass lenses look nearly invisible so people can see your eyes and facial expressions more clearly. Anti-reflective glasses also are more attractive, so you can look your best in all lighting conditions. The visual benefits of lenses with anti-reflective coating include sharper vision with less glare when driving at night and greater comfort during prolonged computer use (compared with wearing eyeglass lenses without AR coating). Anti-reflective coating also is a good idea for sunglasses, because it eliminates glare from sunlight reflecting into your eyes from the back surface of tinted lenses when the sun is behind you. (Generally, AR coating is applied only to the back surface of sunglass lenses because there are no cosmetic or visual benefits to eliminating reflections from the front surface of dark-tinted lenses. There are many benefits to anti-reflective coatings! Whether you use your glasses for the computer, driving, or recreation, you will benefit from having an anti-reflective coating.
Photochromic lenses also know as Transitions lenses. Transitions lenses are equipped with patented, photochromic dyes that enable the lenses to rapidly activate, or darken, when they are exposed to the sun's ultraviolet light. The greater the intensity of UV rays, the darker the lenses become. When UV light is no longer present, including indoors or at night, the lenses fade back to their original state.
Glare from wet roads, light reflecting off other vehicles, and glare from your own windshield can be annoying and dangerous. To eliminate this glare, we offer polarized lenses. Polarized lenses significantly reduce glare, decreasing eye strain and increasing visibility. Polarized lenses are the most effective way to reduce glare. Most glare comes from horizontal surfaces, so the light is "horizontally polarized." Polarized lenses feature vertically-oriented "polarizers." These polarizers block the horizontally-polarized light. The result is a glare-reduced view of the world. Polarized lenses can make a world of difference for any outdoor enthusiast. Fishermen can eliminate bright reflections from the water and actually see into the water more easily than with any other sunglasses. Golfers can see the green easier, and joggers and bikers can enjoy reduced glare from the road. In addition, drivers can enjoy the safety and comfort that polarized lenses provide while driving.
